Caring For Your Phalaenopsis Orchid

Lighting
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Place near an east or north-facing window for optimal growth. Direct sunlight can cause sunburn, so limit it to no more than two to three hours per day.

Watering
Water every seven to ten days, depending on the environment. In summer, it may be more frequent (every four to five days), while in winter, it can be less frequent (up to ten days). Use lukewarm water and ensure the potting medium is moist but not waterlogged. Avoid getting water on the crown to prevent rot.

Humidity
Maintain a humid environment, ideally between 40% and 70% relative humidity. Use a tray with pebbles and water to create a humid microclimate without sitting the pot in water.

Temperature
Daytime temperatures should be between 18°C and 24°C. A slight drop in temperature at night can help induce blooming; aim for around 13°C on cooler nights.

Fertilisation
Use a specialised orchid fertiliser and fertilise every two to four weeks during the growing season. Reduce frequency during winter.

Repotting
Repot every one to two years or when the potting medium breaks down. Use fresh orchid potting mix, trim dead roots, and choose a pot slightly larger than the root system.

About Phalaenopsis Orchids

Phalaenopsis orchids, commonly known as Moth Orchids, are celebrated for their striking visual qualities and remarkable robustness. These orchids feature broad, fleshy leaves that can be beautifully mottled with shades of purple and grey, adding an artistic flair even when not in bloom. The flowers themselves are showy and long-lasting, often exhibiting intricate patterns and vibrant colours that make them a focal point in any setting.

In terms of robustness, Phalaenopsis orchids are surprisingly hardy, dispelling the myth that all orchids are delicate. They possess a strong root system that supports their growth and enables them to thrive in various conditions. With proper care, these plants can live for many years and produce multiple blooms from the same spike, showcasing their resilience and adaptability. Their ability to re-bloom and endure makes them a favourite among both novice and experienced orchid enthusiasts.
